Barbra Streisand is a famous actress and singer, with two Oscars to her name. Alongside holding Emmy, Grammy, and Golden Globe awards, she’s also one of the few performers to have albums sitting at the top of the Billboard 200 for half a century. Her close ties to Ukraine stem from her grandparents, who lived in Halychyna, Berezhany, before emigrating to the United States.
Immediately after the full-scale invasion began, Streisand decisively chose to stand with Ukraine. On the 24th of February, 2022, she tweeted: “My paternal grandparents emigrated from Ukraine and my heart breaks for the courageous people there fighting this Russian invasion. Putin’s propaganda about “denazification” as a rationale is one of the great lies of this Century.“
In September 2022, Streisand was invited by President Zelenskyy to become an ambassador for the UNITED24 platform, focusing on the Medical Aid direction of support.
Streisand’s first project with UNITED24 was the 24,000 Friends of Ukraine initiative, which meant finding donors all over the world to subscribe to a monthly $24 donation. To set an example, she immediately donated $24,000 herself. Then, she did the same again!
Streisand’s voice can be heard in many videos from UNITED24, with her speech on the anniversary of the full-scale invasion touching the heart of every Ukrainian who heard it. Her support is invaluable.
